Luxury packaging for spirits. Gin is experiencing a new growth in terms of popularity. Let’s find out how to enhance it through impactful packaging and increase sales

We have already shown you some luxury packaging for spirits. In that case, however, it was a craft beer. Today we thought of featuring a deep-dive on gin.

The history of gin

Gin has gone from being a drink for strong stomachs to an essential ingredient for sophisticated and exotic cocktails.

In which country did gin production originate? This drink was very popular in England at the end of the 17th century. In fact, juniper liqueur first saw the light in Holland, in the form of a brandy variant. However, not being bound to a specific territory, it has spread to the four corners of the world. Today even London dry gin, the most famous one, can be produced in Spain or Japan as well as in England.

The history of gin has seen some ups and downs. At the end of the 18th century, there was a wave of alcoholism in England possibly due to the uncontrolled spread of this serum.

During the Prohibition period, they put gin in fruity cocktails in the United States to mask its strong flavor. At the same time, however, it was associated with the festive image of the roaring 1920s bars. The glamorous touch of James Bond’s dry martini, based on gin and vermouth, also contributed to its fame.

In the 1980s, gin made a comeback with Bombay Sapphire in the iconic blue bottle. The name, associated with the effigy of Queen Victoria, refers to the success of the liqueur in the Indies of the British Empire. There they kept the malaria epidemic under control by mixing bitter quinine, sugar and sparkling water.

The rebirth of gin

Starting from the second half of the 2000s, the history of gin started an upward trend. The distillate has even eroded market share from vodka, the absolute star of white liqueurs. And the popularity of gin is extending to new territories. In France last year, gin was the alcoholic beverage with the most significant sales growth: almost 9%.

But the rise of gin depends not so much on the volumes of liters sold, but rather on the number of new brands and products launched. The offer is heterogeneous mainly due to the production process. The starting point is a wheat-based alcohol with a neutral taste. Inside,  juniper and other plants, spices and fruits are macerated and then redistilled.

The ingredients used for maceration increase in quantity and taste. This makes the aroma palette infinitely vast. Each distillery has its own recipe and each region its own bouquet.

Let’s move on to a simpler box but no less impactful. Amazing is the pouring rain effect, mimicking the name of the product, obtained with the blue embossed paint. A minimal but elegant pattern is enough to make the packaging simply unforgettable.

A more practical approach, on the other hand, applies to these three bottles of gin contained in a convenient box with a handle in corrugated cardboard. With the black background color and a gold finish, however, the whole turns into a refined and impactful packaging.
